It's Fat Tuesday-All Hail The Zulus!

My New Orleans area readers probably won't be perusing the blog today unless it's on their smartphones because they are out there getting their Mardi Gras 2012 party on.

Today is Fat Tuesday and one of the highlights of today's parades is the Krewe of Zulu Social  Aid & Pleasure Club that started at 8 AM CST.

The krewe has been around for over 100 years and is the only predominately Black krewe that has the distinction of holding its parade on Mardi Gras Day.

Being elected King Zulu is a major honor in the New Orleans Black community, and some of the people who have served as Zulu King and Queen over the organization's history are Louis Armstrong, and current CEO of Johnson Publishing Company Desiree Glapion Rogers

When I lived in New Orleans, it was a must see parade.   It took a major hit post-Katrina but has survived and continues to build on its proud history and tradition.

Now can a sister get a Zulu coconut please?
